Project Background
Global Timecard System (GTS) is a web-based application processing timecards for 250k+ service providers worldwide. Running on outdated mid-2000s technology, the system suffered from deteriorating usability and connectivity issues impacting managers and administrators globally. The project goal: redesign all 192 screens while improving usability and addressing functionality issues throughout.
Main Goals
- Redesign all 192 screens (including help files) with improved usability
- Suggest flow changes to meet new requirements
- Follow UPS UI standards while addressing GUI behavior requirements for the new platform
The Team & My Role
I partnered with a Sr Visual Designer to create high-fidelity wireframes for all 192 screens. I participated in Agile ceremonies, conducted iterative design sessions with the Product Team, and delivered specifications via Sketch and Zeplin to the offshore development team.
Research & Discovery
Due to pandemic constraints, we had limited research resources. We began by auditing the original 192 screens to understand existing workflows and identify usability issues, then sent a survey to 37 GTS users to validate our findings. Questions focused on usage frequency, the number of regions or districts they manage, and which features they found easy versus difficult to use.
Within days, 100% of participants completed the survey, highlighting the urgent need for change and helping us prioritize our redesign efforts. Using this data, I developed a persona representing GTS's primary user groups to guide design decisions.
Timeline & Process
- Research: Study original screens and gather requirements from GTS business and tech teams.
- Design: Create wireframes in Sketch using UPS UI/UX library through iterative collaboration and daily design reviews.
- Present & Iterate: Share with stakeholders and incorporate feedback (typically 2–3 day turnaround).
- Deliver: Hand off specifications via Zeplin to ensure offshore development met style guide standards.
Project Impact
Despite pandemic-related constraints, we delivered all project requirements on time and ahead of schedule to meet development deadlines.
Key accomplishments include:
- Redesigned all 192 GTS screens and help files with improved usability
- Developed systematic solutions to existing functionality issues
- Delivered specifications ahead of schedule to align with development timeline
